Hertford House became a
national property in 1897, by the will of Lady Wallace, widow of the
great collector Sir Richard Wallace. Illegitimate son of the fourth
marquess of Hertford, Sir Richard Wallace was the heir of one of the
biggest art private collections of the world, made up by
different marquess of Hertford.
The collection, opened to the public since 199, is presented in the form of inhabited house where are mixed knickknacks, furnitures and paintings. It conceal one of the most beautiful of European paintingsof the world. The 17th century is particularly represented with "Titus, son of the artist" of Rembrandt, or paintings of Poussin, Van Dyck, Velasquez and Rubens. Masterpieces of previous centuries also have their place such as "Persée and Andromède" of Titien. There, we can also admire one of the most prestigious collection of paintings, porcelains and french furniture of the 18th century, which fascinated the fourth marquess of Hertford. He acquired works of Watteau, Greuze, Boucher and Fragonard and also furnitures realised by the biggests french cabinetmakers suc as Gaudreaus and Riesener. Finally, an exceptional collection of weapons and armors is exhibited to Hertford House since 1875. Those pieces, europeans and orientals, make us discover forms and elements of decoration of weapons and armors of an incredible sharpness. |
