Waddesdon Manor was built in the late 19th century in the style of a 16th century French château for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild (1839 - 1898), a prodigious collector of the decorative arts, paintings and furniture.

Designed by French architect Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur, the Manor is a showcase for Baron Ferdinand's legacy, an unrivalled collection including works of art, French royal furniture, Savonnerie carpets and Sèvres porcelain.

Many items in the collection, which includes examples from Charles Cressent, Riesener, Caffieri and Leroy, were originally created for French palaces such as Versailles and the Louvre.

There are also important portraits by Gainsborough and Reynolds, together with pieces by Dutch and Flemish 17th century masters.
