The Bodleian Library in the University of Oxford is one of the foremost international libraries of advanced study and research in the world.
First open in 1488 with the Duke Humfrey's collection of manuscripts and early printed books, the library was re-endowed and refurbished by Sir Thomas Bodley, scholar and diplomat to Queen Elizabeth I, in 1602.
Its collections now include medieval illuminated manuscripts, maps, music, and early printed books, as well as the Opie Collection of Children's literature (30 000 volumes), the John Johnson Collection of printed ephemera, and very much more.
Books of China, the Arab World, and India were acquired from the early Seventeenth century, and the Bodleian houses the world's finest collection of Hebrew manuscripts.
