Having as its "raison d'être" to be a source of knowledge, the National Library of France has a long tradition of collecting and conserving the patrimony of France.
Charles the V in 1368 deposited nearly 1000 manuscripts within the Library. Since then and following, François the first's decree that all written documents that were published were to be deposited at the Library, they have now a wealth that dates back 500 years. It is a unique record in the history of France. Not only books and manuscripts were deposited but other items have been conserved witin its walls, items such as prints, coins, seals, maps, and even theater decor in miniature.
The National Library of France is situated on two sites : Tolbiac and Richelieu.
