The Ashmolean Museum was established in 1683 by Elias Ashmole and is the oldest museum in England.
Il est le plus ancien musée anglais.
It contains the University of Oxford's collections built up largely from gifts and legacies over three centuries, and of national and international importance.
The collections are divided into five departments : Antiquities, Western Art, Eastern Art and Cast Gallery.
Its most famous treasures are the drawings of Michelangelo and Raphael, the Alfred Jewel, the Egyptians antiquities, Greek vases, Uccello's paintings of the "The Hunt in the Forest", Chinese stoneware and porcelain.
