![]() BAOULE MASK N° 1. Original: Baoule mask (Ivory Coast) Baoulé form part of the Akan Group of the Ivory coast. According to the legend, in the 18th century, queen Abla Pokou took her westward to reach goldbearing regions. She had to sacrify her own son to the God of the river she had to cross. She would then have given to her people the name of "Baoule", which means "The child is dead". Her niece Sakassou succeeded to her and unified the various tribes. Afterthen, the internal quarrels caused little by little the kingdom desintegration. The anthropomorphic masks testify to the elegance and the production of the Baoulé sculptors. Sometimes, they present two faces coast at coast, they evoke the marriage of the moon and the sun or the twins whose birth is regarded as a good predicts.
